THE NAME, "FROZEN OCEAN":
It is not a body of water at all!! A few miles up the road from Frozen Ocean Motocross Park & Speedway is the area that was named Frozen Ocean. It is the flat top of the old Slate Quarry on Quarry Road. At 1,620 feet above sea level, it's the highest spot in the area. Frozen Ocean got its name from a resident who once stood on the lofty spot and looked down on the hills of Moravia. The hills were covered with low-lying clouds that resembled frozen waves with snowy caps.
THE MOTOCROSS TRACK:
Founded by Bill M. Denman, a retired Pro Motocross rider and his father, William N. Denman in 1986. After many years of successful racing, but unable to find adequate sponsorship, Bill directed his racing talents to the track design of Frozen Ocean Motocross Park.
The Frozen Ocean race facility you see today as you enter the front gate is a far cry from the facility that hosted its first motocross race in April, 1987.
Blessed with a mild winter in 1987, work had begun early in the year. The roof was completed on the pavilion, there was an abbreviated announcer's tower, and the modern bathrooms were finished just in time to to greet a record crowed of riders and spectators on opening day. The beginning Slogan was, and still is, "THE TRACK WITH THE RIDER AND SPECTATOR IN MIND." A great effort was made to include the things that the racers, families and others would want to see when they come to frozen Ocean to race.
The Track is constructed with rich New York State Loam Soil, with twists, turns, whoops, and Supercross style jumps. All obstacles are planned at precise distances to keep the rider at safe speeds, decreasing the possibility of injury. From time to time the layout of the track is changed to keep it interesting and challenging, always honing in on one's ability to handle national competition.
The construction of the Track and driveways required two thousand tons of soil and gravel, which came from the farm. Eighteen Tons of gravel was purchased to build additional driveways, parking lots and building sites. A complete irrigation watering system was installed for dry conditions. The sound of the water pumps and the sight of 1 1/2 miles of track set up with sprinklers, greets all who arrive at the track, which is always expertly prepared before each race, according to the weather conditions.
THE STADIUMCROSS TRACK:
In 1991 the Stadiumcross Track was constructed with the same pains-taking effort and is very successful now. The Stadiumcross Series Champions are honored in our program book, "Inside Line" and awarded lots of great prizes at the end of the Series. Each year more riders are participating in the Saturday Night Events, under the powerful new lights that were installed in 1998, thanks to the donation from Tessy Plastics.
The track is designed to be safe and challenging for all skill levels. We want to help riders improve their skill levels and to have a positive racing experience without getting injured. We also want the events to be fun! Thanks to the increasing number of sponsors, we are able to give away more prizes to more riders every year. There are also Door Prizes for all of the spectators who come to watch the exciting race events.
